Common symbolic meanings include:

  • Transformation – Represents rising from hardship and embracing new beginnings.

  • Strength & Courage – A reminder that challenges can shape us into stronger versions of ourselves.

  • Grounding – Connected to the earth, lava stone is often used to promote stability, balance, and staying present.

  • Release & Renewal – Symbolizes letting go of what no longer serves you to make room for personal growth.

  • Calm Under Pressure – Many people use lava stone during meditation as a reminder to remain steady even during life’s storms.

Essential Oil Diffuser

One unique feature of lava stone is that it’s naturally porous. Many people add 1–2 drops of an essential oil (such as lavender, frankincense, peppermint, or eucalyptus) to the beads. The stone slowly diffuses the scent throughout the day, combining aromatherapy with the intention of the mala.

How to use a mala for meditation

  1. Hold the mala in your dominant hand (some traditions use the right hand, while others use whichever feels comfortable).

  2. Start at the bead next to the guru bead. Don’t count the guru bead itself.

  3. Choose a mantra, affirmation, prayer, or simply focus on your breath.

  4. With each repetition, move to the next bead using your thumb. Traditionally, the index finger is avoided because it symbolizes the ego in some spiritual traditions.

  5. Continue until you reach the guru bead again.

  6. If you’d like to continue, turn the mala around and go back the other direction rather than crossing over the guru bead.
